For as long as she can remember, Martina Berti has needed to paint.
As a child, it was the thing she was drawn to most: the quiet concentration, the colour, the feeling of making something from nothing. But she was told, clearly and repeatedly, that art was not a path. That artists struggled. That there were safer and more sensible ways to use a sharp mind and a creative instinct.
So she became an architect.
She studied across Madrid, Málaga, Italy and South Korea, working as a teacher, a waitress and a hostess to fund her own studies, building independence alongside her education. Architecture gave her structure, precision and a deep understanding of how space shapes the way people feel. She worked in London, then returned to Spain, building a career that looked, from the outside, like exactly what it was supposed to be.
But painting never left her.
In her spare hours, she taught herself oil painting. She entered competitions and won. She kept the urge quietly alive, even when life demanded otherwise.
The turning point came when she became a mother. Something shifted: a clarity about where energy belongs, and who deserves it. She realised that the life she had built around other people’s expectations had never quite been hers. And that it was not too late to change that.
Martina Berti Art began three years ago. Not as a reinvention, but as a return.
THE WORK
Her paintings are geometric and minimal, acrylic on canvas, built in precise layers of colour that shift gradually from one tone to the next. Every decision, each line, each edge, each carefully considered transition, comes from her architectural instinct for precision. But precision, in her work, is never an end in itself. It is the means by which emotion arrives. By which calmness settles. By which a painting can become, for the person standing in front of it, a moment of genuine stillness.
She is drawn to the moment when colour stops being colour and becomes light, when a gradient shifts so slowly that the eye cannot find where one tone ends and another begins. Rothko’s emotional weight, Josef Albers’ understanding of colour interaction, James Turrell’s use of light as material, Donald Judd’s precision: these are her references, her conversation partners.
The result is painting that is quietly powerful, designed to bring stillness to the rooms it inhabits, and to reward the people who spend time in front of it.
BEYOND THE CANVAS
Her geometric vocabulary has extended beyond painting. In collaboration with Silk Avenue, a London based bespoke rug house, her paintings have been translated into handmade rugs, bringing her visual language into the tactile and spatial world of interior design.
She works with interior designers, architects and private collectors on commissions, creating original pieces tailored to specific spaces, palettes and intentions. Her work is held in private collections across Europe and beyond.
She is based in Málaga, Spain.
